MARYLAND, 3 OCTOBER —
Microsoft has made its Majorana-based topological quantum hardware available for hands-on, independent testing by DARPA at a new quantum research center in Maryland, alongside the University of Maryland and industry partners. The evaluation proceeds under DARPA's Quantum Benchmarking Initiative and its US2QC work, which exists to determine whether proposed architectures can scale to useful, cost-effective machines.
The step is notable chiefly for what it changes. Previous external scrutiny of the company's topological-qubit programme was conducted remotely; the arrangement now gives DARPA direct, on-site access to the hardware. The distinction matters because Microsoft's Majorana claims remain contested. Earlier papers were retracted, and critics say published data have not fully substantiated the noise-protected Majorana mode.
What the arrangement does not establish is that the hardware works, or that it scales. It establishes that a third party with the means to test it will now do so. Sabine Hossenfelder highlighted the independent-testing angle on 3 October 2026.
