The public record now shows 31 per cent of all bitcoin resting on keys any passerby may read. A patient archivist notes that share has grown by 222,000 coins since May.
More than six million bitcoin, 31.2 per cent of circulating supply, now sit behind public keys visible on the blockchain, according to Glassnode data. The share stands roughly five to six per cent above the low reached in 2023. The exposed balance has grown by 222,000 BTC, valued at $18.2 billion, since the firm's May report, while total supply rose by only 64,000 BTC over the same period. Exchanges accounted for 123,000 BTC of the increase and now hold 1.79 million BTC behind visible keys.
The proportions differ sharply by custodian. Coinbase's exposed share stands at 10 per cent; Binance's at 83 per cent. Fidelity holds roughly 375,000 BTC with 2 per cent exposed. Grayscale's share is 49 per cent, Revolut's 99 per cent, and Robinhood's 100 per cent. Government holdings in the United States, the United Kingdom and El Salvador show no exposure under the methodology.
Public keys become visible through address reuse, early pay-to-public-key outputs, and Taproot outputs. A sufficiently advanced quantum computer, or a mathematical breakthrough, could in principle allow an attacker to derive private keys from them. Ethereum researcher Justin Drake has urged the industry to prepare for 'bunker mode,' arguing that artificial intelligence might find such a shortcut in months rather than years, in a worst case, before quantum machines arrive.
